Radiologic Science Admissions Information

Admission to Armstrong Atlantic State University does not guarantee admission to the Department of Radiologic Sciences. The department has a separate formal admissions process in addition to the admission process for the university. Applicants are required to submit a formal application to the department; transcripts of all college and technical school course work; and participate in an interview (if needed).

The deadline for submission of all application items is November 1st. (Please note this due date does not apply to the Bridge Program. You can apply to the Bridge Program at any time.) No application is complete unless it includes the following: application to the University, application to the Department, official transcripts (sent to Armstrong Atlantic State University's Registrar), and unofficial transcripts (sent to the Department of Radiologic Sciences). Incomplete applications will not be considered.

A new class begins in June (Summer Semester) each year. Applications will be considered on a competitive basis and written notification of acceptance will begin March 1st (no one will be notified of acceptance by phone). If seats are available, applications received after Nov. 1st will be considered. Students are encouraged to begin taking related core courses (specifically the sciences) as soon as possible. The amount of completed course work, the number of science courses completed, the interview (if needed), and GPA determine competitiveness. Additional points may be awarded for completed, select, course work in the major; please see your advisor in regard to this matter.

It is the student's responsiblity to ensure that a current and correct address is on file with the Department of Radiologic Sciences. The Department assumes no responsibility for postal items once they leave the Department of Radiologic Sciences.

Armstrong Atlantic State University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity education institution and does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, age, religion, disability, or national origin in employment, admissions, or activities.

Radiologic Science Admission Criteria:

1. Regular admission to Armstrong Atlantic State University* (If you are having difficulty with university admissions, contact the Department of Radiologic Sciences for assistance).
2. A GPA of 2.5 or higher for all college work. (Applicants with less than 2.5 are encouraged to apply and may be considered under special circumstances.)
3. Prior to the beginning of the program the following must be successfully completed:
  • 50 semester hours of degree requirements that includes college algebra and two college English courses
  • Four of the five required science courses.
    Please note:
    • For nuclear medicine these must include General Chemistry (CHEM 1151 or CHEM 1211 or equivalent) and General Physics (PHYS 1111 or PHSC 1211 or equivalent)
    • For sonography these must include General Biology (BIOL 1107 or equivalent) and General Physics (PHYS 1111 or PHSC 1211 or equivalent)
4. Prior conviction of a felony or misdemeanor may prevent you from sitting for the national certification examination. If you have been convicted of either a felony or misdemeanor, you must complete the pre-application review process as prescribed by the certification agency and provide the Department with verification of eligibility for the examination. See Rad. Sci. application for more info.
5.

Complete the Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET) by January 10th in the year you intend to begin the program. (Example: If you intend to begin a radiologic sciences track or program in June of 2009; the HOBET scores must reach the Department of Radiologic Sciences no later than January 10, 2009.)

Applicants not meeting the criteria stated above may apply and will be considered under special circumstances at a later date.

If accepted into the program the following conditions apply:
  • A student must matriculate each of the six semesters, including summer semester, to remain in the program
  • Although students who have completed as few as 50 hours are accepted into the program, students with fewer than 60 hours of degree requirements completed prior to entry to the program may not graduate with the rest of the class as they may need to enroll for one or two additional semesters to complete requirements.

  • Armstrong Atlantic State University has chosen to require the Regent's Writing and Reading Skills test for all undergraduate students prior to graduation. The Department of Radiologic Sciences supports this AASU graduation requirement. Further information regarding the Regent's Testing Program can be found in the college catalog.
  • In order for students to gain a variety of clinical experiences, rotations other than traditional daytime, weekday hours will be assigned. The rotations will include nights,  weekends , and distant clinical sites.
  • Some required courses are only available during the evening or weekend
  • The program has no formal process for entry level students to take professional courses on a part-time basis. The average time commitment for classes, labs and clinical education is approximately 35-40 hours a week. Students are discouraged from working full time while in the program due to the time commitments of the program
  • Any student who leaves the program for any reason including suspension without prejudice and leave of absence will be readmitted only on a space available basis
  • Pregnancy will not prevent the student from successfully completing the program. However, an extended maternity/paternity leave may result in the delay of the students' graduation
  • Liability Insurance and Health Insurance: All students who are accepted into the program are required to submit complete health history forms and must show evidence of maintaining liability (malpractice) insurance and health insurance before being allowed in any clinical education course. Liability insurance is purchased through a group policy covering students at Armstrong Atlantic State University. Health insurance can be purchased through the university or on your own.

  • Criminal Background Checks and/or Drug Testing: Clinical education programs provide vital hands-on experiences for students as they advance in their education. Students are involved in patient contact and should be held to the same standards of patient safety as would any hospital employee. Those standards include conducting a background check and/or drug testing to be assured of the student's identification and qualifications. Many clinical sites now require these checks for healthcare students rotating through their education program due to patient safety and JCAHO guidelines.

Students who are accepted into our program will be required to complete a criminal background check and/or drug testing prior to entering clinical education. Any fees or costs associated with criminal background checks and/or drug testing are the responsibility of the student. Students who do not pass the criminal background check and/or drug screening may be unable to attend clinical courses and therefore may be unable to complete their program of study. Due to the time-sensitive nature of some tests students are asked to contact the Department of Radiologic Sciences for complete instructions. Criminal background checks and/or drug test results which have expired must be repeated at the student's expense.
