COURSE DESCRIPTION

Management, leadership, health care financing, and total quality concepts specific to the radiation sciences.

This online section of RADS 4450 is designed as a self-paced course, but all coursework must be completed by May 1, 2001. The course is divided into fourteen units consisting learning objectives, chapter goals, research assignments and case study exercises.

The objective of this course is to provide the student with opportunities to develop and demonstrate knowledge acquisition, retention, recall and application in an atmosphere of responsibility and accountability.

To that end, the student will:

  1. Gain a basic understanding of concepts for managing people including human resources, motivation, leadership and communication
  2. Gain a basic understanding of management principles including planning, organizing, directing and controlling
  3. Gain an awareness of the issues involved in better decision making
  4. Develop the ability to construct and interpret charts to gain an understanding of a process
  5. Develop an awareness of multiple approaches that can be used to resolve managerial issues and problems in becoming a practicing manager.
  6. Demonstrate computer literacy
  7. Demonstrate effective use of traditional and modern sources of information


Every time you log onto the course check the Bulletin Board and the Private Mail for messages. Please use the Bulletin Board weekly for the discussion of topics posted by the professor or other students. Participation in these areas will figure into your grade.

GRADING CRITERIA:

Quizzes 10%

You must achieve a grade of 75% in order to receive points for the quiz. In other words, a grade of 74 or less will result in the same points as a grade of zero.

World Wide Web/Internet Research 10%

Eleven modules require additional research and postings to the bulletin board. Once an article is posted, no other student is allowed to use that posted article as part of their research assignment . In other words, each student must find different articles. Follow the instructions for each assignment. Assignments will be graded and points will be distributed according to the grade earned.

End of Chapter Assignments 20%

These are in the form of case study presentations, and are designed to strengthen the student's understanding of specific concepts. Assignments will be graded and points will be distributed according to the grade earned.

Participation 5%

Chat Room and Bulletin Board discussions will be monitored by the professor and your grade will reflect your participation (or lack thereof) in these discussions.

Midterm 20%

The midterm may be taken after completion of unit 8. Email the professor to establish the date and time desired and to obtain a password for this exam.

Final Exam 35%

This is a comprehensive exam that may be taken after completion of Module 14. Email the professor to establish the date and time desired and to obtain a password for this exam.

Completion Requirement

All work (14 modules, quizzes, 11 internet assignments, end of chapter assignments,
midterm and final exams) must be completed by the last class day (May 1, 2001). No incompletes will be given. Failure to complete all work by
May 1, 2001 will result in a failing grade (F).

Use the WebCT Assignment Dropbox feature to submit your assignments.

The instructions for using the Dropbox are:

1. From the Course Homepage click on the Dropbox icon.

2. On the Assignment Page select the appropriate Module assignment. Read the assignment and write it down, then exit WebCT.

3. Complete the assignment on a word processing application (eg, Word Perfect) and save it to your hard drive or a disk. If using a Macintosh computer, label the file with a name followed by .txt

4. Next, go back to the Dropbox and the Assignment Page. Select the appropriate assignment.

5. Select Upload file. Here you will upload your document to the Dropbox.

6. Select Submit Assignment. Be sure to click on this twice until you get the message confirming that your document has been submitted. The assignment is then downloaded to the Instructor who may then read, grad and comment on you paper.

7. To find out your grade and comments, go back to the Assignment Page and it will indicate the grade. By selecting and clicking on "GRADED" in the "RESULTS" column, you may also read any comments that the Instructor has made.

Bonus Points

It is possible to supplement your final grade with bonus points. Bonus points will only be awarded after the completion of all work, and will not substitute for the required elements of the grading criteria. The amount of bonus points received will be representative of the quality of the work performed. Additionally, 3 bonus points may be earned for early completion of both the midterm and final exams (total points =6).

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify two forces affecting the delivery of health services

2. Relate the different units of analysis for evaluating services

3. Discuss the managerial role

4. Define motivation and identify the manager's role in this process

5. Distinguish between management and leadership

6. Understand three reason for conflict in the workplace

7. Appreciate the importance of planning

8. Explain the relationship between work groups and productivity

9. Describe the elements of effective communication and the barriers to such

10. Discuss the role of power and politics in health service organizations

11. Understand the principles of organizational design

12. Use charts and diagrams for determining organizational effectiveness.

13. Describe the change process and relate two types of changes

14. Understand the importance of assessing organizational performance as it relates to healthcare financing.

15. Explain the budget process

ALL WORK MUST BE PERFORMED INDEPENDENTLY

All assignments must be completed independently and must be completely individual and original. It is the responsibility of the student to avoid an action which may cause the instructor to suspect that he/she has committed an ac of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty will result in the appropriate academic and University penalties to the extent that an "F" will be assigned for the course grade.
